Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of healthcare in the world. It has its roots in the East where it was practiced, tested, refined and documented over centuries. In China today, its efficacy is deemed such that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and western medicine are offered side by side. Its use in the west is relatively recent but, with a growing research base, acupuncture has been gaining in popularity in the last forty years.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into certain points on the body with the aim of re-balancing energy and activating the body’s ability to heal itself.
Why acupuncture?
People initially seek acupuncture treatment for a wide variety of reasons; some to relieve specific aches and pains, such as osteoarthritis of the knee, TMJ, headaches and low back pain, or for common health problems like an overactive bladder. Other people choose acupuncture when they can feel their bodily functions are out of balance, but they have no obvious diagnosis. And many have regular treatments because they find it so relaxing.
I qualified with a Licentiate in Acupuncture in 2004, after three years of training at The College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading. I work from a dedicated treatment room in my home in North Berwick.
